Small bathroom, big tiles
Why large tiles make a tiny bathroom look bigger, and everything else we changed.

Our bathroom is 1.7 metres wide and 2.2 metres long. It has a bath, a toilet, a basin and a door that opens inwards, which means it has no space. For years we used small tiles, because small rooms need small tiles. Then a tiler told us the opposite, and he was right.
Why big tiles make small rooms bigger
Every grout line is a line your eye has to cross. Small tiles make a grid of hundreds of lines, and the grid makes the room look busy and small. Large tiles, 60 by 120 centimetres, mean only a few lines on each wall, and the walls look further away than they are.

The same is true for the floor. We used the same tile on the floor and the walls, in the same warm stone colour, so there is no line where the floor stops and the wall starts.
